Recently here in Melbourne, a bunch of Romanians decided to fit skimming devices to various ATMs around the city, and many people were relieved of their cash.

Now, watching the story on the news, I thought “wow, how dumb would you have to be to use an ATM that has a device fitted? That giant grey box is sooooo obvious.”

Then I was emailed this fantastic PDF from the Commonwealth Bank about Skimmers, how to spot them, how they work and how to report them.

On the ATM, a skimmer is undectable to you and me. There just doesn’t seem to be anything there. Until they remove the skimmer itself you wouldn’t even know it was installed.

So, please feel free to link to or distribute the below PDF, and don’t feel you’ve been at all silly for not spotting one – I know I couldn’t have!
