No, this is not a post about “those” benefits, but friends who share specific interests or hobbies.

I have friends who share my love of doll collecting, friends who share my love of crafting, friends who share my passion for web standards, friends who share my cheese addiction, friends who share my love of a nice wine and excellent food experiences.

Some of these interests overlap, some don’t. What it makes for is fantastic small group of friends, all with eclectic interests, who enrich my life and make me happy.

This post is about my Vintage, Antiquing, Op-Shopping friends, a small group that comprises of my Husband, a man we will call S, a man we shall call M and a lovely lady we shall call L.

Two or so weeks ago, H, S, M and I went all the way to Ballarat for a collectors fair, after arriving in the misty, rainy freezing cold at a tin shed, we were a little dissapointed. Once we paid our $5 to get in however, that all changed for me.

Half way down the main row of tables was this:

    Polaroid Leather Case

    Polaroid Leather Case

Hello, thought I – does it actually have a camera in it?

Looking at the price on the ticket, I doubted it. The price was a little high for the minty leather case, but way too low for a camera.

Imagine my girly internal squeeeeee! of delight when I opened the box to see this:

    Inside the Box

    Inside the Box

Trying to hide my anticipation, I took out the camera, still wrapped in it’s plastic bag. A never used, perfectly mint Polaroid Landcamera 1000 with all manuals and warranty cards, a cassette of film AND! an unopened pack of Flashbar.

“Does it work?” I ask the stallholder. “To the best of my knowledge” she replies. I’m skeptical, for $20 Australian, surely this is a mistake. But I buy it anyway, because who can say no to a vintage minty Polaroid? Not me.

My new favourite, slightly pipping my Rocket Camera at the post:

A bunch of dolly friends were talking, and I asked if anyone was interested in a real life face to face Market for dolls. The answer was a resounding YES!

So here it is, The Melbourne Doll Market. A non-profit, for doll collectors, by doll collectors real life in person market!

The Market is for dolls in the retro, modern and fashion categories. This includes Blythe, Barbie, BJDs, Momoko, Fashion Royalty and so many others.

Come along to the Market, and see beautifully crafted fashions and accessories (not nasty pink factory made!) and dolls of all kinds for sale.

I’ve been in Japan for almost a month now.

The trip to celebrate my 40th birthday has been full of win and awesome.

Blythes added to collection: Mango, Margaret Meets Ladybug and Cherry Berry.

I’ve bought more dolly things than I can possibly carry home, so Box One of Three has already been posted back. The other two I’ll post towards the end of the week.

I’ve been to Osaka, Nikko, Nara, Kyoto and a whole bunch of places filled with incredibly natural beauty, and artifacts and people.

Bringing my niece for her first trip away from her home was probably the best way to rediscover this amazing country through fresh eyes. You can see photos on my Flickr and at our dedicated trip site, okiba75.

On Saturday, it is my birthday (or, it r mah burfdai) and my plan is to sleep in, then be pampered. I have an appointment at Watanabe Salon – recommended by many as the best salon in all of Tokyo, to get my hair and make up done, before heading to the 52nd floor of the Tokyo Park Hyatt for dinner at the famous New York Grill.

Apparantly we should see the who’s who of Tokyo there, but we don’t know who they are, or what they look like as we are nobodies.

The excitement to reaching middle age far out weighs any trepidation about getting older. I don’t feel 40, but I do feel wiser, and more balanced.

I promise to do a massive photo gallery entry on this website when we are back in Melbourne in just over a week’s time.

Yoko shows off my new cards

I do most of my shopping online. In fact, other than groceries, around 95% of all my purchases are made via the internet. Either via well-known auction websites or small, personal websites.

When ordering from the net, you can be taking a bit of a risk. But only the same risk you take any time you make any purchase.

When you want a watch you can go to a reputable store front, or buy it from the back of the van in the alley – you know your risks are higher with the guy with the van. The internet is no different.

What I’m actually trying to say now though, is how amazing customer service can keep me coming back to the same shop over and over.

Take Moo for example. They have never ever gotten my order correct on the first go. Never in all the years I have used them. I can hear you all thinking! Why the hell do you keep using a company that can’t even get your order right?!

The answer is quite simple – not only do they acknowledge my disappointment, they take the time not only to fix it – the take the time to explain to me how and why the error occurred. That’s way above and beyond.

Especially when the error was my own fault. See, I design for the web. Not print. I haven’t produced colour print work in more than 8 years. That’s a long time to be out of the loop. So when my cards turned up with all the blues looking very green indeed I contacted Moo.

They responded within 12 hours (they are in the UK) and explained the colour process for the particular Pantone shade I uploaded, and how printing on coated and uncoated card can make colours appear differently to how they look on the computer. They even suggested what I could do to fix the problem – slightly alter my shade to a more blue hue.

And they’d not only reprint my entire order for free – they’d upgrade me to a new product just launched – double sided full designs.

The cards arrived today and I couldn’t be happier.

Another kind of customer service is that which happens when you are not even a customer. I’m searching online for a particular kind of top to wear over an evening dress, in case I get a bit semiconscious about my oppai at a fancy wedding I’m heading to this month.

The store I find on eBay has something that looks perfect – but the listing is for a size that wouldn’t go over my head, let alone my chest area. I emailed the store (Tres Elegance) and asked if they had larger sizes. I wasn’t really expecting much. I had a response in less than a day, explaining they had none in stock. Such a shame really.

The very next day however, I received another email from Sue, the owner of Tres Elegance, saying if she received new stock, would I like to be informed? Not only would I, but her gentle, non-pushy approach has ensured she is now on my Favourite Sellers list without even having made a purchase from her!

If you treat customers and potential customers as the most important people in your business then they will treat you the same. And like me, pass on the good word to the world.

Ages ago, I mentioned that someone was designing the new site logo for me.

Kitty is the work of the incredibly talented Shigetomo-san of MGX Factory™.

I’ve been a fan of Shigetomo-san’s work for a very long time, following him on Flickr, buying his jewellery from Hello Drama, and generally keeping an eye out for new works, shows and artwork to buy.

When Shigetomo-san said he would be delighted to design my logo, I was overjoyed. Basing the look around one of my all time favourite photographs I have taken of Blythe, and his wonderful Monster Girl series, Shigetomo-san came up with the perfect mascot first go.

    For MGX Factory

Well, say hello to Kitty, the new mascot/logo for Pixelkitty/KittyLovesJapan and all my online presence.
